Out to Lunch

In February 1962, Eric Dolphy gathered some musicians and took advantage of a vacant studio to record Out to Lunch in half a day.

He followed this up with a tour of Europe in Mingus’ quintet, then a date or two with Coltrane, and died in June of the same year. Needless to say, he never performed this repertoire in concert…

This music is available, almost blank, weightless with the swifts describing arabesques in the sky of unfinished works. You have to water it to see it grow, prehensile as a thumb and immanent to crunch, to harvest its freedom of tone and perpetuate its jubilant vocation.
