Marmay La Kour

La Réunion

Founded in 2008 in Saint-Joseph, Marmay La Kour is a family band comprising eight musicians and a member of the MaloyAllStar collective. As heirs to the maloya tradition of Mélanz’ Nasyon, they perform authentic, popular and resolutely contemporary music.

With Nout Lang Kozé, this new 10-track album reaffirms Marmay La Kour’s love for Creole culture: the Creole language, maloya and the traditions of Réunion. Marmay La Kour explores culinary traditions through the track “Rougay tomat” and our Creole language with “Lang Kozé”. They explore the theme of love – whether it be romantic love in “Doudou” or a love for maloya – whilst paying homage to Creole identity through the track “Tamboula”. With great humility, they emphasise the importance of distinguishing between maloya and ‘servis kabaré’ – which, for them, remains confined to the realm of the intimate and religious worship – and cultural maloya.

The album “Nout Lang Kozé” recounts everyday anecdotes – whether cultural, social or musical – with a desire to convey a clear message: that of taking pride in who we are.
