Charles Dubois

Angers, France

Charles Dubois is a percussionist, performer and visual artist born in 1993, a graduate of the École des Beaux-Arts d’Angers.

Both within the groups he is involved with and as a solo artist, he physically explores paradoxical spaces that strike a balance between organic textures and repetitive patterns, mechanical movements and raw soundscapes. He has developed a versatile and rudimentary approach to acoustic percussion, correlating a collection of prepared, gathered and improvised sound objects with all kinds of spaces.

He is a member of the Ensemble Nist-Nah, founded by Will Guthrie, a collective of percussionists engaged in ongoing research into the gamelan and a wide range of percussive instruments. He also co-founded the groups Kristallroll and Humbros, which marked the beginning of his early collective explorations. His work is fuelled by numerous musical collaborations, notably with Roxane Métayer, Matthieu Donarier, Lukas Declerck, Lise Barkas and Clément Vercelletto, and extends to other artistic fields: visual artist François Dufeil and his sculptural instruments, artist Julien Berthier, designer David Enon, choreographer Julie Desprairie and writer Colombe Boncenne.

His musical collaborations have been released on labels such as Phantom Limb, Matomah, Black Truffle, Isola Records, Fougère Musique and Soleils Bleus, and have been performed at numerous venues, festivals, community spaces and arts centres in Europe.
