Occitan Polyphonies

Three female singers, four male singers and a percussionist from the northern shores of the Mediterranean make up BARRUT, an ensemble devoted to Occitan polyphony. Their seven voices blend in subtle harmonies and powerful emotional expression, drawing on the roots of traditional polyphonic singing while merging them with the driving rhythms of percussion.

Through original compositions infused with the vitality of folk singing, BARRUT channels both its fervour and its spirit of resistance into music that constantly confronts the madness of the world. Rooted in both traditional polyphony and contemporary music, the group’s sound moves between energy and tenderness, inhabiting that exhilarating, celebratory and subversive space that has always belonged to poetry. While drawing inspiration from the Occitan repertoire, the ensemble also creates its own original texts.

The septet presents its new repertoire, CONTRA-FUÒCS, which also marks a new chapter in the group’s musical aesthetic. Influenced by rock, neo-classical music and cinematic soundscapes, the performance journeys through contrasting landscapes, alternating suspended, contemplative moments with raw, direct intensity.
