Some waves are more positive than others, washing up on our shores with gifts as sublime as they are unexpected… MAAAR’s debut album, Ondas, set for release on November 13, 2026, on Label 4000, is clearly one of them. More than just a simple undertow, it’s a massive wave that places it squarely in the ideal discography of positive globalization.

Three voices, six hands, and a multitude of striking objects come together to form a tumult of soundscapes, occasionally enhanced by the breath of the accordion. In this maelstrom, MAAAR bridges ancient worlds and the one we’d like to see come to pass… These pioneering minds have traveled as much through space as through time to draw upon traditional rhythms and various collected sounds, which they reappropriate with equal parts power and delicacy.

For more than five years now, the trio has been pushing the boundaries of the “fusion” concept—a term so overused in the music world—a little further… In truth, only certain planets can align so perfectly, even as they orbit in distant yet interconnected galaxies. Rebecca Roger Cruz brings together the traditional and underground scenes of Venezuela and the Black Atlantic, as well as the ancient and folk music of the Iberian Peninsula. Elsa Corre has explored the far reaches of Brittany and Galicia, immersing herself in their voices and rhythms to carry on the essential work of passing on these traditions. Charlotte Espieussas brings together the energies of her native Occitania with those she has also gathered in Mexico and Réunion.

It took three “A”s for this deep and mysterious sea (mar = sea in Spanish and Occitan)—a convergence of love to celebrate a new tradition, global and vibrant, rooted in the present. The name MAAAR also refers to a volcanic crater, and there are many metaphors to be drawn from that as well… There is the energy that has lain dormant for centuries without dying out, unleashed by an encounter made possible by modernity. It is a human and artistic eruption, an invitation to introspection as much as to trance!
