Hailing from San Francisco, The Swell released their self-titled debut album in 1991, but it was with their second album, “… Well?”, followed by 41 in 1994, that the band firmly established themselves on the mid-90s music scene as an essential reference (and a defining spirit): a grey, hazy blend of folk and rock (or pop?) of unprecedented precision and balance. Songs with a sombre mood and stunning beauty, multi-layered songwriting, and hauntingly compelling vocals. Thirty years on, the appeal of this major work remains undiminished.
