Whitney Johnson, Lia Kohl, Macie Stewart

United States

Finding a balance in an ever-evolving practice of improvisation and collective composition, the trio formed by Whitney Johnson (Makaya McCraven, Katinka Kleinj), Lia Kohl (Circuit des Yeux, Bitchin Bajas…), and Macie Stewart (a member of Ken Vandermark’s and Rob Mazurek’s bands, who harmonizes with Jeff Tweedy and composes arrangements for SZA, Chance The Rapper, and Kara Jackson) – three prodigies from Chicago – explores a new sonic space, driven by a spirit of playfulness and intuitive experimentation. Their debut album as a trio, titled BODY SOUND, was released on the exciting International Anthem label.

Three voices and three string instruments—viola, cello, and violin, respectively—weave an organic, interwoven sound that is both unique and surprisingly rich.

The trio operates at the intersection of completely free improvisation and meticulous production, using multiple tape recorders and effects to transform improvised material into carefully crafted compositions.
